FF : I Am...FREE Part 35

Nani just couldn't bring her eyes up to look at them.

Manoroma was hardly eating.

Payal and Akash were averting their gazes.

Khushi had already noticed and Arnav was also growing curious…

"What is going on?!"  Khushi asked feeling frustrated...

Finally, Payal looked up, her face blushing…"um...well…"

"What?" Arnav asked expectantly…

"Bhai…" Akash began…"When you and Khushiji are in your room...are you even...um...aware, that other people are in the house…and that these people...you know...can HEAR?"

Khushi's mouth dropped open and her cheeks went bright red…

Arnav, however, felt a jolt of pride strike through him…

He began to grin and rubbed his jaw…"Well, I can't help it if we enjoy...uh...playing cricket on the bed…"

Manoroma covered her mouth with her hand, remembering the time when she had mentioned about their 'cricket' playing…

Akash and Payal began to laugh, while Nani held back a smile…

Khushi's head darted around and finally she looked into her husband's eyes…

He winked and gave a half smile…

Any embarrassment or anger she felt, instantly vanished…

Arnav saw the smile that she shone at him…

But the joyous feeling soon plummeted as Nani stood up…

"Akash Bitwa, are you coming with me this morning?"

"Yes Nani. Just let me get my jacket."

Khushi spoke up…"Where are you going?"

"We're…" Nani started to stutter…"We're going to the hospital...to see Anjali…"

Khushi saw that Arnav was now chewing hard on his food…

She leaned closer…"Arnavji...it's been weeks...please, can we both go and meet with her…"

His hand fisted as he tried to reply with some control…"No."

"Chote, she has asked for you...for you both...You don't have to stay for long...just to say hello...it would really help her recovery…"

Arnav shook his head once again…"No."

"Remember what we discussed last night…?"

*The night before*

As they lay in bed together, exhausted from their passion, Arnav whispered…"I'll never truly understand how easy it is for you to just let go of things…"

Khushi sighed…"I don't find it easy to let go...the past hurts, the present hurts...but love is stronger...and I forgive those I love…"

Arnav yawned and smiled down at her…"I wish I was more like you…"

"Really?" her expression sparkled…

"Well...without all the weird, strange, and crazy bits…"

Khushi laughed as they lay comfortably in each others arms…

*Back to the moment*

"I know that's what I said...but…"

"10 minutes...we can say hello, and then leave…"

Arnav felt that it was against his better judgement, but still…

The love he had for his sister was still there, even though it had taken a massive hit.

"Alright."

…………...

"Chote?...Khushiji?"

Arnav's heart hardened hearing his sisters voice…

As Nani and Akash left the room, Khushi smiled over to Anjali...

Arnav tried to sound calm as he spoke…"How are you feeling?"

"I'm alright. I miss you all…"

Anjali stretched out her hand and held Khushi's…

Arnav immediately reached out and broke their contact…

"Arnavji! What!?"

Anjali stood up, "It's okay Khushiji, I know what he is like…" her eyes moved to her brother's…"Chote, I know what I did was wrong...so very wrong…"

Arnav held onto Khushi tighter…

"But, I have been a lot calmer recently...A lot more aware...And I'm so very sorry…"

Khushi reached out her hand and held Anjali's…

Arnav kept a solid hold around her waist…

"Di, I will always forgive you...I know things have been hard, for everyone…"

Three loud knocks interrupted them as Anjali's doctor appeared in the doorway…

"Mr. Raizada. I  spok to your other family members about Anjali's condition just before they left...If I could now speak to you…"

Arnav held Khushi's hand tight…"Fine, we're coming…"

But he felt her tug him to a stop…"Arnavji, let me stay with Di…"

He turned away, "No."

As he began leading her out again, she asked once more…"Arnavji...Stop. Please. Let me stay with her. Talk to her."

"She is doing very well Mr. Raizada. Your wife will be safe."

Finally Arnav faced Khushi…

He looked at his sister…

Then back to his wife…

"Khushi, I just...I don't feel that…"

"I'll be fine. Really. You're not far. And even the doctor said she's doing well…"

He stared into her eyes…

If there was any way to resist her, he wasn't aware of it...so he nodded…

Khushi smiled and moved into his body…"I love you…"

As their hands disconnected, Arnav felt a twinge of fear…

Something wasn't right…

But he tried to shake off the feeling…

The doctor let him to the nurses station and pulled out Anjali's file…

"Can you make this quick please…" Arnav said, fidgeting where he stood.

……………...

Khushi sat beside Anjali…"Di, I'm so glad you're feeling better…"

Anjali felt her contempt rise up, but swallowed it down fast…"I know...I miss everyone...I miss chote...I mean, he didn't even come to me the way you did…"

Khushi's eyes looked sad as Anjali stood up and walked around the bed…

"I know Di, but he is hurting. Everyone is. I hate that so much pain has happened to …"

Khushi stopped and moved up further onto the bed to turn and face her…

But what she saw, made her body turn cold…

Anjali had pulled the extra bed sheets from the chair beside the door and lined them up along the floor…

"Di? What are you…"

Anjali smirked while lifting a bottle of rubbing alcohol in her hand…

She poured the liquid haphazardly over the sheets and Khushi became frightened to move…

"Now." Anjali said boldly…"Now you can be trapped in this room! With no one around you! Let's see how YOU feel!"

"Di…" her voice was shaking…"no...listen...I'll leave...I'll get out of everyone's life! Please...stop this!"

Anjali pulled a matchbox from out of her pocket…"Do you know how difficult it was to FIND matches…? After the trouble I went to find them, you think that I'll stop now!?"

She struck the match…

Her eyes were begging Anjali not to drop it...but then, in alarming slow motion, the lit match fell to the floor…

Khushi heard the bedroom door slam and felt her heart slam harder.

The sheets went up in flames,  and fire began spreading fast…

Flames were crackling as they formed a hot trail between her and the doorway...

The heat and the tangle of the bedclothes formed a nightmarish prison from which she could not escape.

Her vision started to fog up and she fought back a panic attack...

Khushi was as limp as a dishrag, barely able to stay upright as the room blurred before her…

Smoke.

"Oh…" she began coughing…

The floor around her started to glow…

The blankets on the floor were on fire, the flames were leaping toward the ceiling, the metal on the bed was creaking and groaning like a foundering ship.

Finally finding her courage, she saw a jug of water on the small table behind her...

She hurled it over the bed and onto the flames as her eyes searched for the fire alarm…

It was on the other side of the room by the door, and a wall of fire was blocking her from getting to it...

"Oh...G...God…" she said spluttering...

With begging eyes, Khushi looked around, desperate for help…

Her chest started to ache…

The acrid smoke from the burning bedding filled her throat.

With her breathing already in a weakened state, she started to stumble as her vision darkened…

She felt water trickling down her face…

Where they her tears?

Just as she was about to hit the floor, she felt someone tugging her hand...

…………………

When Arnav heard a loud slamming door echo through the halls, his attention instantly shifted from the doctor…

"What was that noise?" he muttered as his heart started to race…

Anjali's doctor peered down the hallway…"It's nothing, probably the janitor closing the storeroom…"

Arnav edged away…"No...that was…"

Trying to continue the Doctor said, "She has been responding well to all the counsellors and is a willing participant in…"

Arnav's subconscious was starting to hyperventilate…

Feeling as though his world was becoming a kaleidoscope, he started walking away…which soon turned into running…

He broke out in a nervous sweat as he neared the room…

"Fuck...the door's closed…"

Grabbing the handle he began pulling hard…

Through the frosted glass, he could see an orange glow, which made his adrenalin pump violently through his body…

"Khushi!" He screamed as hospital staff started crowding around him…

"Sir, what has --"

Arnav was ready to attack…"The door slammed! Locked! AND NOW IT LOOKS LIKE THERE'S FIRE!!!"

The staff quickly called for assistance as Arnav took matters into his own hands…

He stood back, lifted his leg and slammed his body weight into kicking down the door…

A loud crack split through the door and Arnav doubled the power of his kick as finally he broke into the smoke filled room...

In the same moment that Khushi was about to tumble to the ground, the door of her room burst open and Arnav erupted through it…

Pulling the lever by the door, the overhead sprinklers spluttered on and began dousing the flames…

Leaping over the wall of dissipating fire,  he grabbed Khushi and pulled her into the clear...

Arnav hauled her close to him, swearing out of fear…

There was raw fury and something else, something far more disturbing, in his voice and in his touch.

“Of all the bloody stupid, fucking dangerous things!” Arnav’s arms were about her and Khushi could feel him shaking with rage.

His eyes were black with it.

Arnav’s gaze went to the smoking fabric on the floor, and from there to the blackened sheets that were still sizzling on the bed…

“God Almighty, it was spreading so fast... she could have...she could have been...”

"Mr. Raizada, take her to the next room, we will see to her immediately…"

Khushi, who was coughing and gasping, was barely aware of what was going on as Arnav carried her to another room and laid her on the bed…

As he held her hand, his mind was flashing with fear of when she was here only  weeks prior.

"Tell me she will be fine...TELL ME!" he shouted at the doctor…

"She's breathing, she's confused, but she's conscious…"

Arnav's heart rattled…"TELL ME SHE WILL BE FINE!"

As the doctor checked her heart, her breathing, and her blood pressure, he tried to reassure Arnav…"Sir, she WILL be fine...Her breathing is clear, her chest is clear, her heart is strong...She has no burns, no injuries. She wasn't exposed to smoke for very long. You responded very quickly. Once she wakes up, I'll give her a quick checkup and then you should probably take her home."

Arnav stood up fast…"That's it!?"

"YES. She really is quite okay. She hasn't been burnt. She merely had a short exposure to smoke."

The doctor positioned an oxygen mask over her nose and mouth and looked up at the furious husband before him…"Because of the last situation she was in when she was here, I'm giving her oxygen just as an added help until she wakes...she will be fine."

………

As he waited beside her, he heard the hospital staff begin to question the whereabouts of Anjali.

He entire nervous system was shaking with anger…

"How dare she…how dare she try this again…"

He was still in shock.

What if he HADN'T reacted so fast.

If he HADN'T have arrived to save her so quickly...then...

Khushi began arching her back and stretching…

"Khushi...Khushi...I'm here with you…"

Opening her eyes, she blinked a few times, trying to  dull the haze…

"Arnavji...where?…" immediately remembering the flames, Khushi pulled the mask off and sat upright…

"Hey! Khushi stop…slow down!"

She looked from left to right, her hair swinging over her shoulders…"There was fire! Arnavji there was a fire!"

Arnav moved closer to her, holding her shoulders…"Look at me! You're safe! You weren't hurt at all! I got there in time..."

As her gaze hit his, she asked…"Was anyone else hurt? Where is Di?!"

If Arnav's anger could have exploded, this would have been the moment.

"Where's DI!?" He spat out…"You want to know how SHE is!?"

Khushi quickly tried to cover what she said, but Arnav pulled her against his chest…

"...she left YOU in a blazing room…" his voice was a low, soft growl…"...YOU! Don't you dare ask about her! I saved YOU from a burning room!"

Coming to realization, Khushi was starting to shake now, too.

Her eyes started stinging from the smoke and tears.

And still Arnav held her with arms as tight as steel bands.

She could feel the fury elemental in him but somehow she knew that it was anger born of fear for her.

Her hands were clutching to the material of his shirt and she could feel the heat of him through the thin fabric…

His eyes were focused on her hard and fast, and she felt her stomach drop with nervousness at the anger she saw there.

"A...Ar…Arnavji?…"

“Why the HELL did I listen to you!!!???!!! I told you that she was dangerous and yet YOU...WHY did I listen to you!?! You've always had the WORST ideas, and now, even when I KNEW better, I still let your bewitching eyes sway my decision!?”

With his insults flying at her from every angle, Khushi  began willing herself to faint…

But her consciousness was on full alert, and even though her eyes were stinging and her head was fogging, she heard and understood everything he screamed at her…

She was scared by the anger she saw in Arnav’s face but she felt defiant, as well.

Pushing to his feet, his fists clenched at his sides as he yelled at her..."I'm taking you home... RIGHT NOW! Before I say anymore, and before I track down my own sister and…" he paused, before he said something he shouldn’t...

"Arnavji stop-"

Whirling back around, He pointed his finger fiercely at her…"Don't. You. DARE!"

Khushi flinched, feeling stung.

Arnav simply looked at her.

Suddenly bounding up close to her, invading her space, he grabbed her by the shoulders.

Khushi’s stomach swooped down to her toes with a mixture of fear and anticipation.

Arnav bent his head and, without any preamble at all, he kissed her.

Shock skittered through Khushi’s veins at the rough possession.

She gasped in outrage as he slid his tongue into her mouth, tasting her.

It was deliberate and insolent and she felt it all the way through her body.

“You are my wife...You are under MY protection...and you're not going to say another word about it...Thank GOD you weren't hurt! Because right now, I'm way too angry to CARE about your OPINIONS!” Arnav said firmly.

There was something dark and heavy in his eyes now.

His gaze lingered on her lips.

She pressed her fingers into his shirt, willing her hands to stop shaking.

"Ar...navji...I am…" she warily continued…"I am...just concerned…"

“I...I am concerned about you!”

Anger flared endlessly in his eyes.

She could feel it in him, banked down, under control, but burning as fiercely as the fire .

His fists were now clenched at his sides as though he was ready to catch her to him and shake her.

She could feel his fury and his frustration and desperately wanted to soothe him…"Please don't be angry...I'm...I'm already scared…"

“I know...” he said. “So am I!”

He flung out a hand... “I speak to Di's doctor for 5 WHOLE MINUTES and then return to see you trapped in a burning room!"

Moving closer once again, he saw her eyes fall closed…"Khushi, YOU have been through enough,  and when I saw you…" he began to choke up…

She heard a raw anguish in his voice, but he took a steadying breath and moderated his tone.

“Okay...okay...I'm sorry Arnavji...” Khushi whispered.

She felt shaken and confused by his anger but she knew that this went deeper...the fear of losing her tormented him.

“Sorry is not good enough!” Arnav growled...

His voice shook with repressed feeling.

“She has been purposefully trying to sabotage our relationship! She poisoned you! Have you have become so forgiving that you do not have
any sense, or even consider other my feelings!”

The blatant unfairness of this made Khushi’s temper snap.

“That,” she said furiously, “is completely unjust.”

She pushed him roughly away from her…

She did it very deliberately.

Inside she was fizzing with indignation at Arnav’s criticism.

All he ever seemed to do in the past was tell her off and drag her around draining all the joy and the color out of everything.

“I care because she is YOUR sister! She is MY sister in law! I forgive because that is who I am! I forgive people I love! I forgave you because I love you! I forgive Di because she has been through so much! Why else do you think she is doing this!?”

She swung out her hands and pushed at his chest again.

She could feel her cheeks burning with heat and fury.

Her whole body was shaking... “The reason you cannot understand that is because you are stiff-necked and full of anger!”

Feeling stronger by the second, she swung her legs over the bed and stood up...

“You keep letting your past rule your anger! And you keep letting your anger rule your present! I think all you really care for is to be seen to fulfill your obligations. The people themselves do not matter to you at all. They are just another means by which you can demonstrate that you do your cold duty!”

There was a frozen silence.

Arnav's eyes had gone as icy as a winter night, his expression terrifyingly blank.

“Is that all you have to say?” His tone was extremely polite.

“No,” Khushi said.

She felt like a runaway car careening down a hill; now she had started, she could not stop until the inevitable crash at the end.

She herself was being transported back to all the times in the past where he had hurt her…"You care for no one. You have not a drop of love in you and you never have—”

She stopped.

Utterly broken by what she said, she stared into his eyes...

And what she saw was pain so searing, so vivid, that it stole her breath.

Slowly walking around the bed, he came to stand so close to her that she could feel his breath on her face…

“You have no idea,” he said, very quietly. “No idea at all how hurt I am that the one person who I protected is now hurting you...You have no idea the hell I went through those weeks sitting beside you, wondering whether or not you were going to wake up...and Khushi...even if it makes you hate me, I am NOT letting her put you in danger....”

He took her hand firmly, turned and hauled her away, unwilling to wait for the doctor to return.

The sound of their footsteps echoed on the hard floor.

And as they drove home,  there was nothing but silence.

  2. God they should lock Anjali up and throw away the key

She is fooling everybody, they are are pampering her and she is insane

She hates Khushi because her stupid husband wants Khushi

    Anjali still worships her husband

Khushi is so naive in thinking Anjali just needs their love and support

Arnav has the right idea, let her rot where she is

  6. I am not Khushi so I am definitely going to say this, Anjali you should rott in hell for making Arnav and Khushi go through this whrn they done so many things to help her, may it be individually or together. And I felt really sorry for Arnav, he doesn't deserve this, not even khushi' long lecture on Arnav not knowing how to love and care for someine. Is she that blind that she can't see what's right infront of her eyes. Can't wait to see what happens next. Oh almost forgot it, playing cricket on the bed, I really doubt that. Really Sarah, that part was really hilarious, I could imagine Arnav's smirk at that statement, Great chapter, well balanced with everything. And I respect your decision to update your FFs even once a month. I really appreciate that. Continue soonish :) :)
